York City Police Warn of Towing ScamNov 18th, 2010 | By Editorial Staff | Category: National News
York City, Pa., officials are warning local auto-repair facilities of a towing scam in the area, according to a news report.
Police said the scam involves a station receiving a call from a relay operator requesting a tow service for a third party who is out of state. A credit card number is requested to pay for the tow as the tow company in that state can’t take a credit card in the field for the tow. Repayment is to be made by the out-of-state towing company to the York repair station upon arrival of the car, according to the report.
The latest example of the scam in the York area was for a car that needed to be towed from Alabama to York for brake work and the owner of car was supposedly already in York, the report states.
Anyone with information is asked to call York City Police at 717-846-1234 or send an anonymous text to TIP411 (847-411) by typing the word YORKTIPS and then leaving a message.
