Hay — It’s Tow Mater

Kramer’s Wrecker Service of Grand Island, Neb., won first place and the People’s Choice Award for their “Tow Mater gets his wings” hay bale at the Nebraska State Fair hay bale decorating contest.

This year’s theme was “high flying fun” and this version of Tow Mater getting his wings was the top choice.

The body is an old Weaver unit, actual airplane wings were added, along with a propeller and beacon and wing lights that both work. It was designed by Joe Bartz and Chris Linke. Joe runs the tow truck at the Nebraska State Fair, handling tows, jumpstarts, tires and lockouts.

Kramer’s Wrecker Service has been in operation since 1963 when LeRoy and Arlene Kramer started the business. Tim and Lisa Bartz later took over the family-owned company.

Joe says it’s interesting to watch kids’ reaction to the bale. They run up and talk to it like it’s the “real” Tow Mater. They also want their photos taken with it.

This is the first year Kramer’s Wrecker Service entered the contest — and they’re looking forward to next year.
