The Summit

Jack SchrockThis past week I attended the Towing & Recovery Management Summit in New Orleans sponsored by Tow Times. There were 13 different sessions offered by experts in their respective fields ranging from lobbying to change laws and regulations (presented by T & R attorney Michael McGovern) to secrets of negotiating with large customers (presented by Angelo DiNisi, professor at Tulane University) and 11 others including the following:

Is Your Business Positioned to Sell?

Business Killers and Value Drivers

How to Run Your Business So You Can Leave it In Style

Towing Industry Economics

Introduction to Marketing

The Value of Internet Marketing

Surviving a DOT Audit

Employee Manuals

If a Stripper is not an Independent Contractor, Who Is?

This two-and-a-half-day series of classroom presentations and discussions was all about getting smarter and putting more “business in your business.” It was about how the average tower can copy the strategies of big business to save money and increase profits, but at a fraction of the cost. But it was more — much more. It was all about not only surviving but increasing profits in the emerging competitive environment. These presenters came from all over the country to tell us how to work smarter and more importantly, they told us about things we didn’t even know about.

I am told that Tow Times will soon publish more details of the Summit along with a feature article which will go into greater detail about this very important undertaking. Having been around T & R for the past 50 years I would say that the Summit was the best thing that has happened in towing and recovery since the introduction of the hydraulic wrecker 40 years ago.

The Summit is targeted for every tower, large and small, because there is valuable information offered for all. However, the smaller tower ordinarily can’t afford business management expenses, so the Summit should be of special interest to the one- and two-truck operators. Plans are already underway for the next Summit and all towers encouraged to consider attending.

Remember: you don’t know what you don’t know, and your future success will be determined by how well you deal with all the challenges that come from your blind spots.

Stay tuned for more details.
