Epiphany

Nick KemperIn many works of fiction, there comes a point in the story when the main character has what’s called an “epiphany.” This is a fancy word for figuring something out that you kind of already knew, or that you’ve been coming to know for a long time. It could be good or bad, but in literature or movies, it’s usually something good, or at least significant.

After you’ve worked what seems like a hundred years at various jobs, you might one day look back and have an epiphany something like this: “Holy crap, I’ve done a lot of stuff!” That’s what happened to me recently as I drove my ’97 Civic to work thinking about the various things I’ve done in the towing industry: driver, dispatcher, manager and now Parts Guy. I’ve done a lot of stuff, and I remember most of it, and even better, I recorded a lot of it in journals and newsletter articles.

As you work through the years, it kind of creeps up on you, this combination of knowledge and experience, all you’ve learned from all the mistakes you made, and all the happy memories of laughing with friends you’ve made. When I had my epiphany, my next thought was, “Geez, you better do something with it.”

There’s this school of thought out there that if you set a goal, the universe conspires to help you. I kind of ascribe to that, so I wasn’t totally surprised when Tim Jackson of Tow Times called me that very day and said, “Hey Nick, would you like to write a blog for our new website?”

But it was a little freaky.

So here we are. If you’ve read my e-newsletter for TowPartsNow, you know what you’ll be getting. If you haven’t, I hope I can hold your interest for a few minutes a couple times a week. I’m looking forward to your thoughts, ideas and feedback as well. Hey, I’m not going to do all the work here.

Have a safe and profitable week.

Nick Kemper
