Happy Birthday America

Every year we celebrate the Fourth of July at our house, not because of parades, fireworks and backyard cookouts. We celebrate because this was America’s day of independence. This was the day when Americans became responsible for their future, and what a terrific job they did.

On an earlier Independence Day I tricked up a Holmes 750 demo with the stars and stripes displayed from bumper to tailboard. A picture of that wrecker is attached, and I can say that it attracted a lot of attention as I toured the country in it. I don’t have a demo anymore, but I do have an outside flagpole. Today, tomorrow and through the weekend I will fly the “Stars and Stripes” flag with 15 stars. This is the one that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Later, we will fly the flag called “Old Glory” with its 48 stars because this was the flag that flew over Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Like most of us, I am also a descendant of immigrants. My grandfather homesteaded and ranched in West Texas and I am proud of him and my own parents for what they did to preserve our freedom and liberty. God bless them, and God bless America … forever.
