A Little “Me” Time

Last Christmas my employees gave me a gift certificate to a local salon and spa. I was thrilled with their gift; I could use it to spend some time on just me. I decided to use it for a manicure and a pedicure. Okay guys don’t go rolling your eyes just yet. (Just a FYI – a mani is when you get your nails done and a pedi is when you get your toenails done.)

My appointment was at 3 and I strolled back into the shop around 5:15. My husband wanted to know what took me so long. I just smiled and waved my lovely, painted fingernails and toenails at him. After two hours of being pampered, I was feeling pretty and in a good mood — smiling and relaxed — like when I eat chocolate. And, I didn’t feel guilty about taking some time away from the office either. I could tell by the look on my husband’s face and the shake of his head, he wasn’t going to say anything more.

Let’s face it, towing is not a 9 to 5 profession. My towing business always came first and still does. But part of the success of that business depends on how I am feeling and handling the day-to-day stress. It has taken me a long time to realize that both my husband and I need some “me” time to keep us sane. The business is important, but it’s not everything.

So this is the lesson guys: as women, we don’t need a lot to make us happy. We need to know we are appreciated, simple gifts (like chocolate) go a long way to get us back into a happy mood, and don’t make us feel guilty for taking some “me” time.

Like the saying goes … “if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.”
