The Proof is In the PuddingJun 6th, 2014 | By Editorial Staff | Category: Geri Roskopf's Blog
Tow Times magazine did a snapshot of the towing industry by conducting a survey of their readers focusing on the general look of companies and their owners. I found some statistics very interesting. I do realize that, like any survey, there is a margin for error – but I think the percentages shown are pretty accurate.
It was interesting to see the percentages of the level of education. There are many owners who have some college education and are a technical or college graduate. Me? I think I am still attending the School of Hard Knocks!
It isn’t any great surprise that most towing companies are owned by men, but I was excited to see that the percentage of female owners was 8 percent. This is a sign of changing times. I think even just a few years ago that percentage would have been much lower.
I was happy to see that – like me – a great majority of readers learn industry information and news from print magazines. There really is power in advertisements proven by the percentage of readers who called a number, visited a website or placed an order from a listed advertisement.
Not surprising also are the high percentages of readers following social media like Facebook for towing companies, associations, equipment manufacturers and suppliers and industry publications.
The one area I was truly disappointed in seeing the figures for was industry affiliates. Although almost half of the readers belong to their state associations, only 24 percent belong to TRAA – the national towing association and a mere 12 percent are members of the towing industry’s history – the International Towing and Recovery Hall of Fame and Museum. I would encourage the other 47 percent to step up and join at least one of these.
The proof is in the pudding, folks. Think of yourself as a link on a chain. Even missing one link will make that chain weaker. Don’t be that one link – join — and make yourself and the towing industry stronger.
