Apr 1st, 2011 | By Editorial Staff | Category: National News, TexasA tow truck driver was struck and killed on the shoulder of Highway 77 northbound near Woodsboro, Texas, on Thursday, March 31. According to news reports, Christian Gutierrez, 24, was loading a vehicle that had been in an unreported accident when he was hit by a UPS tractor-trailer, Refugio County police said. Gutierrez worked for Coby’s Auto and Wrecker Service in Victoria.
The driver of the UPS tractor-trailer, Steven Booker, 44, of Houston, did not stop after striking Gutierrez, a three-time Iraq combat Marine veteran, and told troopers of the Department of Public Safety that he did not know his rig hit the operator.
Gutierrez’s death comes a day after the Texas Senate approved a Move Over bill requiring motorists to slow 20 miles per hour under the speed limit or change lanes when passing tow trucks at work on the roadside.
