World’s Fastest Wrecker

As part of our January issue Racing Special, Tow Times takes a look at the “World’s Fastest Wrecker” on display at the International Towing and Recovery Museum in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The 1979 Chevy Silverado packing a 454 cubic inch V8 and a 440 Holmes Hi-Power wrecker bed topped out at 109.330 mph on August 1, 1979, at the Talladega 500 Speedway. The truck’s speed was estimated to exceed 130 mph in the straight-aways. It was driven by retired race car driver Eddie Martin on the record-setting run, which had to be cut short because the truck’s tires began to melt from the heat.

See the January issue Tow Times Racing Special for more about the fastest wrecker in the world.
