News reports say an Amtrak passenger train struck a car that was stranded on railroad tracks in Lowell, N.C., early Sunday, Jan. 16. No one was injured. Police believe the vehicle was repossessed before dawn near the tracks, and in crossing the tracks the vehicle became disconnected from the tow truck. The tow truck driver was unable to remove the car as an Amtrak train carrying 180 passengers approached shortly after 5 a.m.
The tow truck driver reportedly abandoned the car and left the scene. Police are looking for the tow truck driver, who could face charges for fleeing the scene of the crash, police said.
